Homemade Croutons
The best homemade croutons are SO easy to make! All you need are just a few simple, customizable ingredients and your oven. Perfect for salads and soups!
Friends, these croutons are AH-mazing. They are SO AH-mazing that we were eating them off the pan and not even worried about saving them for the salad we were planning to top with them!
Speaking of that salad – how gorgeous is it?
You know how store-bought croutons are crispy through and through? Don’t get me wrong, I love those, too…but my homemade croutons are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. They are toasty and buttery and garlicky and I mean, it’s bread, so…
Customize Your Crouton Recipe
The easiest way to customize this recipe is to use the ingredients you have in your pantry. We’re talking any of your favorite dried herbs like basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme, paprika, onion salt, celery salt, I’d even use Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Seasoning…you get the picture!
How to Make Your Own Croutons
This recipe for homemade croutons is SO easy – we’re mixing everything on the sheet pan so you have minimal dishes to wash and we’re using ingredients you probably have in your pantry.
A lot of recipes call for stale bread, but don’t worry about that, I make my croutons using hearty breads like French baguettes or in this case, already sliced sourdough bread. Sourdough Croutons, y’all!
All you have to do it cube it up, throw it on the pan, and then toss with the butter/olive oil mixture and bake!
How Long Will Homemade Croutons Last?
Store your croutons in a zip bag or air tight container on the counter for about 3 days – if they last that long! Otherwise, they can be frozen for up to a month. This recipe makes enough croutons for 4-6 servings if topping salads or soups.
Homemade Croutons
The best homemade croutons are SO easy to make! All you need are just a few simple, customizable ingredients and your oven. Perfect for salads and soups!
Ingredients
- 4 Cups Sourdough Bread, Cubed - if using large sliced sourdough, this is about 5-7 pieces
- 2 T Butter, Melted
- 2 T Olive Oil
- 1 tsp Minced Fresh Garlic or 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
- 1 tsp Dried Parsley, Optional
- 1/2 tsp Italian Seasoning, Optional
- 1 T Parmesan Cheese, Grated
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°
- In a small mixing bowl or measuring cup, add butter, olive oil, garlic, salt and dried seasonings if using (don't add Parmesan just yet)
- On a large baking sheet, place the cubed bread. Be sure to spread them out and allow for them to have room - don't overcrowd - so that each piece can get enough air to get good and crispy.
- Drizzle the butter/olive oil mixture over the cubes of bread.
- Toss and then add the Parmesan Cheese, then toss again.
- Bake for 10 minutes.
- Toss the cubes then bake for remainder of time or until the cubes are a nice golden color.
- Remove from oven and eat them off the pan - I MEAN, allow to cool and then top your favorite salads or soups!
