Homemade Flour Tortillas

Just 4 simple ingredients to make these easy and delicious homemade flour tortillas! No baking powder or soda; just flour, water, salt and olive oil!

You’re in for a treat today, friends! Not only is this recipe super simple, it is delicious – you’ll wonder why you haven’t made your own before – AND why you’d ever buy them again!

Ingredients in Store Bought Tortillas

In MOST store-bought flour tortillas you’ll find things like guar gum, calcium propionate, potassium sorbate, artificial flavors (so many to mention), and of course, preservatives. That shelf life, yo.

Are they convenient? Yes. But I just can’t wrap my head around those weird ingredients when I know that I can make perfectly delicious, chewy, pully, foldy flour tortillas at home with just 4 ingredients.

I recently lamented about the same same issues I have with store-bought bread here Easy Dutch Oven Rustic Bread. Hubby just can’t have these strange ingredients anymore so why not make these things at home?

Four Ingredient Tortillas

As I mentioned, you just need 4 simple ingredients to make your own flour tortillas at home:

Honestly, can you really even count water? So really this could be 3 Ingredient Flour Tortillas – just sayin.

What to Eat With Flour Tortillas?

Where do I begin!? To name a few:

  • Sandwich wraps
  • Quesadillas
  • Grilled Cheese
  • Tortilla Chips
  • Tacos
  • Breakfast burritos

How to Make Your Own Flour Tortillas

These are so easy to make! I bet you already have the ingredients in your pantry. All you have to do is mix the ingredients, cut them, shape them into dough balls, then flatten and cook! You’ll be ready to eat these in 15 minutes!

If you’d rather make flour tortillas with butter, no problem, just swap out the olive oil, same measurements. Just be sure the butter is softened, or even melted and cooled.

Homemade Tortilla Chips

Here’s a bonus recipe for you! Once you’ve made the tortillas, cut them into triangles. Then brush them with some olive oil, season with salt and pepper, then bake them for a deliciously light and crunchy chip!

You could even brush them with canola or coconut oil, then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar before baking.

Preheat your oven to 400, line a baking sheet with foil or parchment, then lay the chips onto the sheet, leaving a little space between them. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until beginning to brown.

Remove from oven then cool. Once cool, store them in an airtight container for up to a week.

Just 4 simple ingredients to make these easy and delicious homemade flour tortillas! No baking powder or soda; just flour, water, salt and olive oil!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups All Purpose Flour
  • 3/4 tsp Salt
  • 3/4 cup Water
  • 3 T Olive Oil

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of your stand mixer, add all of the ingredients.
  2. I found it easiest to use my kneading hook, but the regular hook would work just as well.
  3. Turn your mixer on and let all of the ingredients come together, scraping the sides until the dough forms a ball.
  4. Remove to parchment paper or plastic - let sit for 8-10 minutes to rest. Homemade Flour Tortillas
  5. Cut the dough ball into 8 equal parts. Homemade Flour Tortillas
  6. Roll each piece into a ball. Homemade Flour Tortillas
  7. Place each ball between two pieces of parchment (I just fold one piece in half). Homemade Flour Tortillas
  8. Next take a cast iron skillet, or other heavy bottomed pan, on top of the parchment covered dough ball and PRESSSSSSS.  You may have to do it a few times, but it should flatten it out pretty good.  You can use your fingers or a rolling pin if you want it flatter.  I'm currently trying to decide if I need a tortilla press in my life to get them really flat... 9. It will look like this.  I found it best to do this one at a time:  Flatten one ball, cook it, then do another, etc. Homemade Flour Tortillas
  10. Using a different skillet set the heat to med/high.  Spray a little nonstick spray or olive oil onto the pan.  Once you have a tortilla ready to go, place it on the hot skillet and cook for about 1-2 mins or until a few brown spots begin to show, then fip and do the same thing to the other side.
  11. Continue until all are cooked.  Let cool on a paper towel if not eating right away then store in a plastic baggie in the fridge for up to a week.
  12. We use these for tacos, tostadas, sandwich wraps, quesadillas, breakfast burritos...the list goes on!

Can I Freeze Homemade Tortillas?

You sure can! I would let them cool, then place a piece of parchment paper between each tortilla. Place them all in a gallon sized, zip top bag, then freeze for up to 2 months. When ready to enjoy, just thaw on the counter for an hour or two.
